Music Heals

Every day I realize more and more how music heals. Sometimes it is when I’m listening to my headphones while traveling and sometimes it is when I find the perfect lyrics for a song… sometimes it is after a performance and I can feel the emotion in my audience. Music gives a feeling of love, warmth, and relaxation that is so unique.

I first witnessed the healing power of music when I was a nurse and was just singing on the side. I sat next to one of my patients who was suffering from Dementia who had just stopped swallowing and I began to sing gently to the woman. She looked into my eyes and for the first time I saw her smile and then she began to eat. The doctors were amazed. I took a quick break from nursing but returned to my job in Toronto where I continued to notice the healing powers of music. I sang to a young man battling cancer who was undergoing extensive treatment and when he was released his dad approached me with tear-filled eyes and said “My son is better because of the way you sang to him.”musicheals1
Those were the days I will never forget as they inspired me to follow my dreams of singing and songwriting. Although my nursing days are forever in my memory I will never turn back because I experience the healing powers of music every single day.  musicheals2
